What Is Pigtail And What Are Its Types?
It is a kind of fiber cable that provides the termination of fiber optic cables in patch panel or ODF (optical distribution frame) and contains a fiber connector at one end. Unlike the patchcord, it only has a connector on one end; the other end is left blank for fusion attachment.
Pigtails need to have low bend radii to allow work in the small space in the splice cassettes in the ODF. Otherwise, fiber attenuation/reflections due to ‘bending’, also called ‘bird’s eye’, will occur, which is undesirable in practical application. It is commonly manufactured from fiber types G.657.A1 or G.657.A2 with a lower bending radius. It is covered with PVC or LSZH type materials in accordance with the intended use. LSZH (low smoke zero halogen) coatings are generally preferred in areas where the fire risk is high.
What are the types?
It is generally classified according to the connector types found at the ends. The most commonly used types in Turkey are SC/APC (green color connector) or SC/UPC (blue color connector).
